I TRIED LEAVING HIM😭 (BREAK UP PRANK ON BOYFRIEND)
Why My Boyfriend and I Are Quitting Our Jobs to Sail Around the World
Gina Harris, 28, and Jose Castello, 27, are giving new meaning to #RelationshipGoals: The couple are quitting their jobs, and their normal lives in San Francisco, to sail around the world together, starting in October.
Their families thought they were crazy at first: "You have good jobs and a beautiful apartment — why would you leave all of that behind?'" Harris remembers her mom asking.
They're both driven and successful, working together at a tech company (which they'd rather not name) where they met two years ago, she as a marketing manager and he in sales. But despite their sweet California life — sailing after work, camping, drinks with friends — their 9-to-5 jobs and routines started to feel tired and their shared "adventuring spirit" was crying out for a rush. "We were doing everything we were 'supposed' to do," says Harris. "We felt like, 'We can leave it all and go live a different life.'
Showers and Internet will be scarce for the year or so after they head for the Galapagos Islands, Australia, the Mediterranean, and back again. As they're getting ready toset sail, the Couch Sailors talked to Cosmopolitan.com about literally going where the wind takes them, drafting their farewell-to-work emails — and how they get down on their boat.
Harris:People are going to think we're crazy, but we started talking about this trip on our first date, two years ago. He was like, "There's this thing I've been wanting to do for a while…."
Castello:I went to 14 schools growing up, because of my dad's job at a bank, so I already had a gypsy lifestyle. I used to go out sailing with my friends, and I would come home every night and read this blog called Bumfuzzle. It was about a guy who worked in finance, and he and his wife quit their jobs and bought a catamaran in Florida and started sailing around the world without even really knowing how to sail. I was like, "I know how to sail. If he can do it, I should be able to do it."
Harris:Both of us just love being on the water. We met at work, and the first time we hung out, with a group of coworkers, he sailed to the bar, which was really fucking cool. We went out on the boat and started talking. Maybe it was the sunset and a few beers, but it was such a magical moment that I just felt like he had the same adventuring spirit that I do — after college, I moved to Paris for a few years to work in social media. He never says "No." Just "How?"
A few months later, we were in Spain visiting his family, and we were sailing with his grandpa, and Jose just said, "Why don't we do this?" So nonchalant. Like, "Uh, the sky is blue.
