Why is an allergy during pregnancy

Allergy is a non-standard response of the immune system to external stimuli: the body of a pregnant woman triggers an inflammatory response in response to exposure to pollen, home or office dust, pet hair, chemicals contained in cleaning or detergents. Reactions can occur to certain foods and medicines, insect bites and even sunlight.

External signs of allergies

The most common manifestations of an allergic reaction are redness at the site of contact with the allergen, burning, itching, and tearing, runny nose, cough, urticaria, edema. Some time after the disappearance of the stimulus, the allergic reaction subsides.
Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to predict the occurrence of an allergic reaction in pregnant women. The immune system of the future mother is working in a very intense mode and can react to seemingly absolutely harmless substances. Therefore, future mothers can reduce the likelihood of allergies only by eliminating contact with the most popular irritants. For example, it is possible to limit the use of citrus and chocolate, more often to make wet cleaning in the house, to avoid contact with flowering field plants.

Is pregnancy allergy dangerous?

In itself, mild allergies are not dangerous for the fetus, however, persistent allergic reactions deplete the future mother's body and may happen to be an indirect cause of deterioration of health and the occurrence of concomitant diseases.
Reactions of the body, related to serious manifestations of allergy, for example, angioedema, anaphylactic shock, persistent urticaria, are difficult for the body of a pregnant woman and require resuscitation measures to stop the attack. For example, anaphylactic shock arising from an insect bite or the introduction of a drug can even be fatal.

Diagnosis and treatment

In most cases, allergies are detected as a result of a medical examination based on the presence of characteristic symptoms. After interviewing a pregnant woman, the doctor usually recommends eliminating contact with possible allergens and prescribing a treatment that will alleviate the course of the disease. If it is not possible to determine the cause of the allergy, special tests can be assigned to the pregnant woman: a small amount of the solution containing the allergen is injected under the skin and the body's reaction is monitored. If within half an hour the allergy was not manifested, it means that the pregnant woman’s body is indifferent to this substance.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to cure allergies, you can only stop its aggravation and save a pregnant woman from the symptoms of the disease. It is impossible to engage in self-medication for pregnant women: choose and prescribe drugs that are harmless to the fetus, only a doctor can!
