Spice up your fat loss with cinnamon this weekend

Sally Cinnamon might have made Ian Brown’s world, but the real spice has far sweeter side effects. Research published in the journalMetabolismfound a dose of cinnamon upped thermogenic fat-burning. Stick this on top of research claiming 6g (about three level tsp) is enough to steady blood sugar and delay gastric emptying, so study subjects remained full for longer. 

Sadly, this is unlikely to work if you get your cinnamon fix via sticky buns, muffins and carrot cake. Luckily, we’ve come up with these four delicious, easy-to-follow recipes to make sure you get your recommended daily amount of the sumptuous spice.

Breakfast: cinnamon toast

- Stick 2 slices of wholewheat bread in the toaster. While you wait for the bread to pop up, mash a banana with 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon.
- Spread the ‘banana butter’ over the toasted bread. The day’s hardly begun and you’re already trimming down your tummy.

Lunch: sweet potato soup

- Fry a chopped onion and garlic in oil, and stir in 1/2 tsp cinnamon and a pinch of chilli and ground ginger once done.
- Add 200g sweet potatoes and cook for 3 minutes. Pour in 100ml each of chicken stock and coconut milk.
- Simmer for 8 minutes, then blend. It sure beats a supermarket sarnie.

Dinner: Moroccan baked chicken


- Brown 2 chicken thighs in oil. Then chop half an onion and carrot, and fry with 1 tsp each of cinnamon, paprika, cumin, garlic and ginger.
- Stick in 100g brown rice and put in a casserole dish with the chicken, a tin of tomatoes and 500ml stock.
- Cook at 200°C for 35 minutes. A bit of spice with high-protein benefits makes this a hearty, healthy winter dish.

Dessert: sweet and spicy quinoa

- Simmer 75g quinoa with 1tsp cinnamon in 150ml water for 15 minutes.
- Stir in 110ml coconut; simmer for 10 minutes. Add 1/2 tbsp honey, a handful of chopped nuts and another of mixed berries or chopped apple.
- Cook for 10 minutes.
