General information about crimping

Pressure testing of the heating system is carried out both in apartment buildings, where heating is centralized, and in private properties. If the rules are followed, pressure testing can be done by hand without recourse to the help of specialists. Inspection and troubleshooting of the system will make it possible to prevent leaks in places where control and shut-off valves are installed, and help to avoid leaks in radiators.

The reliability of a system consisting of a set of elements is determined by the state of the weakest component: if it fails, the whole system stops. Pressure testing, which is otherwise called hydraulic testing, just allows you to identify weaknesses in the heating system.

Pressure testing is a kind of leak test and serves to check the quality of installation of the heating system.This set of activities is carried out in the following cases:

  • when a new system is put into operation;
  • after repair of the heating system;
  • in preparation for the start of the new heating season;
  • after replacing elements of the heating system.

Conduct self-pressure testing of the heating system in cases where there is confidence in the good condition of the equipment, when the pipelines obviously do not contain salts and harmful deposits, if you do not need an act of conducting hydraulic tests.

The principles of crimping are simple. To check the tightness of the system using special pumps pumped air or water under pressure. If the integrity of the system is broken, in places of poor-quality assembly, water or air will burst out. At detection of malfunctions and defects of installation, they are eliminated and repeated pressure testing is carried out. Only the heating system in which no leakage has been detected can be allowed for operation. Humidifying compounds should also be considered a malfunction of the system, as well as their fogging.

Pressure testing: preparatory work

Before starting the crimping, turn off the system, remove the coolant from it.The parameters at which the tests will be carried out are determined by the technical features and condition of the heating system under test.

Before pressing the system in a private house, first turn off the heating boiler, expansion tank and air vent, close the stop valves. Temperature controllers on radiators are recommended to be temporarily removed, since they are not designed for high pressure. Sometimes only a part of the overall system is tested; in this case, the desired section is cut off with jumpers-goni.

In any heating system, a certain pressure must be maintained, which will ensure the movement of the coolant necessary to heat radiators and pipes. The pressure in the system should allow the coolant to rise to the desired height. For this reason, in high-rise buildings, the pressure of the system will be more significant than in a one- or two-story building.

Stages of preparatory work during pressure testing:

  • check of locking devices on all parts of the system;
  • leak test, sealing problem areas with glands;
  • inspection and adjustment of pipeline insulation elements;
  • disconnection of the building from the general heating system.

Heating system pressure testing

Determine the type and parameters of the coolant. In the heating system of a private house when conducting pressure testing, the coolant should be under a working pressure of 2 atmospheres. When entering the system, the coolant displaces the air accumulated in the pipes. In this capacity it can be antifreeze or ordinary tap water, but in any case, the working substance must fill all the elements of the pipeline without exception. Antifreeze is more expensive during operation, but it makes it possible to avoid damage to the system during its emergency freezing.

Prepare the equipment. Qualified crimping of the heating system is carried out using a special device, called a pressure tester. This is a hydraulic pump, which can be manual or electric. The high cost of the equipment makes it unprofitable to purchase it for personal use for one-time crimping. Typically, opressovshchiki acquired firms specializing in the work of this kind. The hose extending from the opressovschika ends with a cap nut. Connect this hose to the heating system at the site of the expansion tank, drain valve or at any other suitable point.

Manual pressure pumps are autonomous, they allow to build up pressure by means of a lever. As a rule, a pressure gauge is built into the device. Such devices are most convenient to carry out pressure testing of small heating systems. Electric pumps are more complex in their design, but they allow you to create a pressure level set by the operator.

The choice of a particular method of crimping depends on the time of year in which the installation of the heating system was carried out. For example, if the installation is done in the winter, then pouring water into the system can be dangerous: if something goes wrong, the liquid can freeze in the pipes.

Pneumatic crimping of the heating system

When pneumatic crimping in any place of the heating system, connect the compressor through which air will be pumped. Control the pressure in the system by gauge. It is recommended to withstand the pressure of about 40-50% above the worker. Manometer put on the entrance to the system.If during the test his arrow is lowered, the system is leaky.

After crimping is done, check all connections to identify any leaks. Control is required for both detachable joints and soldered joints (if the system has propylene pipes). During air pressure testing, the compounds are treated with soapy water to identify the places from where the air is vented. Accurately following the order of crimping, you can easily detect problems in the system. The main attention should be paid to the places of threaded connections, gaskets, locking devices, radiators. The most vulnerable places are elements of the system hidden in the floor. If during the pressure test it was possible to identify problem areas, after removal of the coolant from the system, the defects must be eliminated.

Hydraulic crimping of the heating system

To carry out the crimping with your own hands, hydraulically prepare the accessories. Submersible pumps, used for pressure testing the heating system with their own hands, require a separate tank, from which water will be pumped. Most often for this purpose use a deep basin or a large bucket.Connect the pump with hose clamps to the valve of the system through which the water is drained, then lower the device into a basin or bucket, open the drain valve and connect the pump.

As the pump operates, it is required to constantly monitor the pressure in the heating system with a pressure gauge. Water should be added to the tank with the pump all the time. When the pressure in the system rises to 2-2.5 atmospheres, the pump can be turned off. The system brought to working pressure is kept in this state for about 10-15 minutes. When checking a system consisting entirely of plastic pipes, it is required to withstand a test pressure of about half an hour. Now it is necessary to release air from the system. For this purpose, Mayevsky's taps or special air taps are used.

When the pressure in the system drops to 1 atmosphere, refill the system with water. This is necessary in order to force all air out of the system. As soon as the gauge needle is set to one value and stops oscillating, the pressure test can be considered complete. When the pressure is established in the range of 1.2-1.5 atmospheres, it is necessary to inspect the pipeline. If there are no leaks, you can proceed to the final adjustment of the system parameters.

Upon completion of work, leave the heating system under pressure for about a day to ensure that all problem areas are identified. Remember that the repair of the pipeline is carried out after the complete or at least partial removal of the coolant from the system.

End of crimping

At the final stage of testing, flush the system with water. If necessary, this operation is repeated. The level of pressure in the heating system, corresponding to the operational characteristics, will testify to the successful completion of the pressure testing.
