How to make a self-leveling floor do it yourself

What is a self-leveling floor

Bulk floor is a polymeric seamless floor covering. The thickness of the polymer film of the self-leveling floor can be 1-7 mm and depends on the load on the floor, temperature and humidity of the room. In special cases, the thickness can reach a maximum - a few centimeters. For example, in industrial premises and at sports complexes.
Such a floor is called “liquid” because it is not covered or laid as usual types of floors, but poured. Also, these floors are called self-leveling, or liquid linoleum. This name is due to the fact that the externally self-leveling floor resembles linoleum, while it is very smooth, monolithic and without seams, it has a smooth surface. In addition, sometimes self-leveling floor called filler. This term is considered to be not quite correct, but it is very popular among the people.
The advantages of self-leveling floors:
- long service life;
- lack of seams and noticeable joints when flooring;
- unique drawing;
- possibility of combination with other types of coatings, etc.

Preparation of the basis under a bulk floor

In the technology of installation of a self-leveling floor in a house or apartment, an important point is the preparation of the foundation. Cement or concrete screed must be strong enough not to crumble or crumble. If there are such areas, they must be eliminated, primed, and also filled with a special mixture for screed. In the same way you need to deal with areas where there are greasy and oily stains.
To fill the dismantled areas it is preferable to use modern dry mixes. They are fairly simple to use, and dry faster than conventional cement-sand mixtures. Since liquid linoleum is a self-flowing composition, the surface of the base of the floor must be very flat. All roughness, grooves and irregularities should be smoothed out as carefully as possible.
The technology of pouring liquid linoleum involves the use of deformation foam tape that needs to be glued around the perimeter of the room, as well as at the locations of the doorways. The thickness of this tape is a few millimeters.Thanks to the expansion joint, the impact on the floor from the main tie is softened. At the same time, the integrity of the self-leveling floors is not violated, and their appearance remains as flawless. When the floor is dry, the deformation tape is removed, and the space between the wall and the floor covering is filled with sealant.
It is possible to fill in liquid linoleum only at a temperature not lower than + 15 ° C. At the same time in the room should not be drafts. When the temperature rises and falls in the finished mixture, the reactions are disturbed, as a result, it will harden too quickly or slowly spread. As a result, the color of the floor changes, its quality and durability deteriorates.When pouring a self-leveling floor, the humidity of the base should also be optimal - no more than 4%. If the moisture value of the base is higher than this figure, the floor must be treated twice with a waterproofing compound.
The primer base is needed to increase the adhesion (adhesion) of the screed to the self-leveling floor, as well as to close the pores of the floor. If the pores are not closed at the base, air will flow out of the composition when casting. The result may be the formation of defects on the surface of the finished floor.A primer for concrete is suitable for a concrete base, and a usual primer for a cement screed.
Without priming, the primer should be applied with a roller onto the screed, brushing hard-to-reach places with a brush. If the base is too porous, the soil will quickly become absorbed and dry out. In this case, it is necessary to process the base again.
Experts do not recommend to fill the self-leveling floor on a wooden base. If it is nevertheless necessary, it is necessary to carry out serious preparation of the foundation before pouring. Although even in this case there will be no guarantee that the quality of the self-leveling floor will be up to standard. Preparation of the base of the floor of ceramic tiles is quite simple. The tile should be held very firmly, it must be degreased with a solvent, and then coated with a primer for smooth surfaces.

Self-leveling floor technology

The base will be ready for pouring liquid linoleum after the second layer of primer is completely dry. It is necessary to clarify in the instructions the drying time of the primer composition, since it may be different for different manufacturers.When preparing the casting mixture, it is also necessary to strictly follow the recommendations of the manufacturer. Throughout the work on pouring the self-leveling floor, the mixture should be of the same consistency.
First, the main layer is laid. The mixture diluted with water is carefully poured onto the floor, and then evenly distributed using a squeegee or metal strip. Squeegee is a special tool, the design of which has an adjustable gap. Thanks to its use, you can get the required thickness of the self-flowing floor. In more difficult to reach places, use a spatula.
In order to make the floor surface smooth and even, after leveling up the composition, it is necessary to remove air bubbles. To do this, use aerated plastic roller with spikes. Their length depends on the thickness of the floor.
If you need to cover a large area with the composition, you should fill it with parts - stripes or squares, which are staggered. To move while working on the freshly frosted floor, you need to use special shoes - paint shoes, which have spikes on the sole.
The finish layer is poured a few days after pouring the main (base). The thickness of the final layer is only a few millimeters. After the top layer of the floor is completely dry, it needs to be coated with polyurethane-based varnish. This allows you to maintain a good appearance of the floor, as well as extend its life.
It is necessary to ensure that the same temperature is maintained in the room where the filling was made. In addition, the self-leveling floor can not be wetted. Various defects may appear on its surface, which will not be easy to remove.
Following these recommendations, you can easily make your own self-leveling floor, which will have excellent decorative and operational qualities.
