Here’s How To Tell If Your Flushing Skin Is Rosacea—Plus, How To Treat The Symptoms If It Is

Ever notice yourself blushing, even when you're not embarrassed? Does a glass or two of wine at dinner leave you looking flushed the next morning? Or does an afternoon in the sun leave your face pink for days? Chances are you have rosacea, a skin condition that affects about 16 million Americans, primarily middle-aged women with fair skin. People with rosacea have flushing and redness on their faces, and as the condition worsens, they may also develop small pustules or pimples.

While we know that rosacea is likely due to a combination of environmental and hereditary factors, experts still aren’t sure what exactly causes rosacea, according to the Mayo Clinic. Some believe it's caused by inflammation. Others say it's a type of acne. Research conducted by the National Rosacea Society suggests that rosacea sufferers may have a higher number of the microscopic mites known as Demodex, which are normally found on the skin. Since there are so many unanswered questions, scientists have been unable to find a cure. But that doesn’t mean you should just ignore the symptoms.

When left untreated, rosacea can get progressively worse. What starts out as slight blushing that comes and goes can develop into papulopustular rosacea, complete with redness and itchy bumps that cover the face and chest. Bloodshot eyes, spider veins, pimples, and a red bulbous nose are other symptoms of a serious flare-up. No matter how mild or serious your rosacea may be,avoiding triggers like stress, alcohol, caffeine, extreme temperatures, and spicy foods can help ward off outbreaks. You should also try to stay out of the sun and regularly slather on a titanium dioxide-based sunscreen for sensitive skin, like Clinique SPF 30 (Buy now: , ). Prescription and over-the-counter topical treatments can also help, as can oral medications.

Here are some options to discuss with your doctor, as well as mild treatments to try on your own:
