Crutch Hammer

To perform fine work in the form of engraving and embossing it is important to have a special tool, one of which is a small hammer. Its dimensions and low weight allow:
  • to do minor work without fear of damaging other elements;
  • to work for a long time without fatigue in their hands;
  • optimally distribute the impact weight, controlling the applied effort.
The cost of such a tool can be quite high. Therefore, many craftsmen prefer to make it independently, while adjusting its parameters to fit their needs. The usual railway crutch is used for this.

The process of manufacturing a hammer from a railway crutch

Choosing a railway crutch. It must be free from obvious defects or deformations. We crush the crutch in a vice, and completely remove rust from it. For this we use a grinding machine.

At this stage, it is very important to remove all traces of corrosion, even if they are deeply eaten into metal.

If we are going to make two hammers from one crutch, then we need to measure their length in advance, dividing our workpiece approximately in half. In each half in the middle we mark a hole for the handle.

With the help of a drilling machine we make the necessary holes. The handle usually has an oval profile. Therefore, for each hammer will take 2-3 holes, located as close to each other. In the next stage, using a file, we process the holes obtained, connecting them until an oval profile is obtained. We also process the entire workpiece, removing all the burrs.
