St. Constantine's Day and Queen Helena - June 3

THE HOLY EMPEROR OF CONSTANTIN, who received from the Church the name EQUAL-ACCASTABLE, and in world history named GREAT, was brought up in respect for the Christian religion. His father, Caesar Constantius Chlorine, the ruler of Gaul and Britain, did not persecute Christians in the countries he ruled. After his death, the emperor was proclaimed Constantine, who approved the freedom of confession of the Christian faith. In 313, he issued the Edict of Milan on Tolerance, and in 323, having reigned as the only emperor over the entire Roman Empire, he extended its operation to the whole of its eastern part. Rejecting paganism, the emperor did not leave ancient Rome, the former center of a pagan state, as the capital of the empire, but transferred his capital to Byzantium, which was renamed Constantinople.

He was convinced that only the Christian religion could unite the vast diverse Roman Empire. Deeply worshiping the Cross of the Lord, the emperor wanted to find the Life-giving Cross itself, on which our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. For this purpose, he sent his mother to Jerusalem TZARITSU ELENA, giving her great powers and material means. The life-giving Cross was miraculously found in the year 326. The Queen ordered the liberation in Jerusalem of all the places associated with the earthly life of the Lord and His Most Pure Mother, from all traces of paganism, and ordered the Christian churches to be built in these places. Having distributed generous alms in Jerusalem and staged meals for the poor, holy Queen Helen returned to Constantinople, where she soon died in the year 327. Emperor Constantine, having received Holy Baptism at the end of his life, withdrew to the Lord in 337. Day of the celebration of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

On this day, thanks to the intercession and help of the Mother of God to the Russian people through the Vladimir Icon, Moscow was spared from the invasion of the Kazan Khan Makhmet Giray in 1521. Celebrations of this icon also take place on July 6 and September 8.Before this image, they swore an oath of allegiance to Russia, before him they prayed in military campaigns. Before him made the election of the Metropolitans and Patriarchs of All Russia. There is no Russian church where this icon would not be.

Trinity. From the history of the establishment of the holiday - June 3

Pentecost was originally of Old Testament origin: this holiday was celebrated in honor of giving the holy prophet Moses the Divine commandments on Mount Sinai and in gratitude to God for the growth of new fruits of the earth and the new harvest. The event of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles changed the meaning of this day for Christians: as the Holy Scriptures of the New Testament narrate, the apostles began to celebrate the day of Pentecost every year, commemorating the veneration of the Most Holy Trinity. The same is said in the Apostolic decrees, in the works of the holy fathers of the Church - the saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John the Chrysostom.

In the Orthodox Church there is a pious custom of decorating on the Pentecost feast the temples of God and dwellings with woody green branches (usually birch), herbs and flowers. This tradition has two explanations. The first is based on the fact that in the Old Testament times on the Feast of Pentecost the Jews were decorated with prayer houses and dwellings with branches, grasses and flowers in memory of the fact that the commandments of God were given to the holy prophet Moses at the time when everything was green and blossomed near the Sinai mountain.

The second explanation reminds us of the appearance of God to the forefather Abraham in the form of three angel wanderers. It is this event of the Old Testament Holy History that is depicted on our icon of the Holy Trinity. The most famous of these icons was created by the great Russian icon painter Rev. Andrei Rublev in the XV century. The place of this event was the Mamrean oakwood, where the forefather Abraham was then. Therefore, the church, decorated with branches, flowers and grass, symbolically represents this oak grove, in the church tradition called tabernacle.

In the well-known book of the outstanding Russian writer Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelev "The Summer of the Lord", there are preserved touching descriptions of the Trinity, observed by the eyes of a little boy - the author himself:

“We go all with flowers. I have lilies of the valley, and in the middle is a big peony. The fence at the Kazan [Church] is green, in birch trees. The steps are littered with grass so thickly that their legs are confused. It smells of green meadow, raw grass. In the doorway, nothing is visible from the birch trees, everyone touches their heads, moves them apart. We enter as if in a grove. In the church there is a greenish dusk and silence, no footsteps are heard, everything is covered with grass. And the smell is very special, some thick, green, even a little stuffy. The iconostasis is slightly visible, the gold-leaf gilding, silver-silver, is flickering in the birch trees. Huddled in the green of the lamp. Faces of icons, in birches, seem alive to me - they look out of a grove. Birches peek through the windows, as if they want to pray. Everywhere birches: they are on banners, and at the crucifix, and over the candle-box, where I stand, as if we have a gazebo. I can not see singing and krylos, - somewhere sing in the birch trees. Birches and in the altar - hang out leaves over the Throne. It seems to me from the box that grass is growing in the altar. On the pulpit it is poured so thickly that the deacon gets confused in the grass, passes into the altar with the Royal Doors, touches his shoulders behind the birch trees, and they rustle above him. This is something ... not at all in the church! Another quite fun. I hear the familiar sing: Light is quiet ”, and then, suddenly, the very thing that Gorkin sang to me yesterday, such a rare, terrible victory:

"Who is the great God, as our God of God?" Thou art bog-oh, thy-ry-ay chu-de-sa-ah! ... ”

I look at Gorkin - he hears? His head is thrown over, he sings. And I try to sing, whisper.

This is not our church: this is a completely different kind of sacred garden. And they came not to pray, but on a holiday, we carry flowers, and now there will be another, completely different, and forever. And there, in the altar, too - completely different. There, in the birch trees, invisibly, the Lord is looking at us, in the Holy Trinity, the mysterious Three Faces, with road. And nothing is scary. With them came birch trees, flowers and grass, and all of us, sinners, and the earth itself, which is now alive, and we all bow to Him, and He rests under the birch tree.
